Team from Croatian University of Slavonski Brod Visiting UG Engages Faculty, Staff and Students at the IAST Greenhouse Facility.
Collaborators from University of Slavonski Brod, Croatia under the Erasmus+ Programme Key Action 1 - KA171 (2023-1-HR01-KA171-HED-000148076) visited the University of Ghana between February 10 – 14, 2025, as part of a professional training initiative. The visiting team, comprising Hrvoje Sivric, Robert Benkovic, and Ivica Lackovic, observed UG colleagues in their professional activities and explore potential avenues for joint cooperation within the Erasmus+ programme framework. The delegation who expressed interest in agricultural technology and related areas visited the Greenhouse centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
The Acting Director of the Institute, Dr. Henry Ofosuhene Sintim, welcomed the delegation to the greenhouse facility. In his welcome remarks, he indicated that the Greenhouse centre was established with support from the Skills Development Fund (SDF) and the College of Basic and Applied Sciences. He stated that the centre serves as a hub for training and research in the cultivation of vegetables under a protected environment. Dr. Sintim highlighted that, over the years, the Institute has organized short courses for vegetable growers to promote food safety, good agricultural practices, encourage vegetable production in urban spaces for both commercial and research purposes and reduce food miles. He further noted that the facility is also used by students from the School of Agriculture as part of their practical training and research activities.
The visitors were briefed on greenhouse operations in Ghana, followed by a tour of the facility. The delegation explored the greenhouse facility, including the fertigation systems, sterilization of growing media and the cropping systems under tropical greenhouses.
Both parties deliberated on areas for collaboration, including knowledge sharing, technology transfer, and investment opportunities. The visit was beneficial as it fostered international platform to share knowledge in greenhouse technology. Both sides expressed enthusiasm for future engagements and agreed to follow up with detailed proposals for collaboration.
The delegation was guided to the IAST facility by the International Programmes Office of the University of Ghana.
